Coimbatore: Minister of Health Tamil Nadu M Subramaniam said on Tuesday examining Zika virus prevention activities at the Wala Post Wala Post and in the villages on the Border of TN-Kerala.
He said the prevention of mosquito breeding, especially the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, was the only way to prevent the Zika virus from entering the country.
He said until now Tamil Nadu did not have a single Zika virus case.
The minister, accompanied by Food Minister R Sakkarapani, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan and Public Health Director Dr.
T Selvavinayagam examined the campground in Mavuthampathi village near Madukkarai.
They also checked several houses in Panchayat to check the sources of mosquito nurseries as part of the virus prevention steps.
“We created awareness among the public that the Zika virus was transmitted by AAEDes Aegypti mosquitoes, which breed in a source of water which stagnates such as plastic pots, damaged ships, tires,” the Minister said.
He checked the screening of people and vehicles coming from Kerala at the Wala Post checkpoint.
Kerala has so far reported 37 cases of Zika virus.
He said the country currently reported 40-50 dengue cases a month, caused by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito, but they all recover well.
He said the Zika virus mainly affected pregnant women, causing the fetus to develop microcephali, or a small head.
