Chennai: Tamil Nadu reports 23,989 new Covid-19 cases – 530 more than on the day of Pongal.
Health officials said a small increase might be because people had delayed testing during the festival, but the cause of concern was an increase in occupancy and ICU mortality.
Most hotspots don’t see a big increase in new cases.
While Chennai reported 8,978 new cases, neighboring chengalpet was second with 2,854 new cases.
Coimbatore (1,732) and Tiruvallur (1,478) are the only other districts that report cases in four digits.
Over the past week, the state has recorded a daily case increase between 1,000 and nearly 3,000 cases.
“We don’t want people to interpret this as a sign of decline.
We may still peak,” said Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
While the case of the case fatality – the number of people killed in the total number of people tested positively – fixed 1.3%, the number of people who have been dying have increased.
A week ago on January 9, the average weekly death was nine.
On Saturday, when 11 deaths were reported, the weekly average was 18.
“Even though there were 11 deaths today, the state has reported 51 deaths between Thursday and Friday.
Some reports that come on Saturday will be added to the list on Sunday and Monday , “said an official.
Of the 11 deaths on Saturday, six were in Chennai, two in Tiruvallur and each in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Tuticorin.
Active cases also increased from 51,335 to 1,31,007 in a week.
Although hospital receipts have fallen from 11% to 6%, the occupancy of beds in an icus rose from 4% at 9 to 7% on Saturday.
On January 9, there were 429 patients in the intensive care unit and on Thursday the number increased to 696.
In Chennai, ICU revenues rose to 15% from 9% a week ago.
“Most people in the ICU are unknown,” said the expert of the infectious disease Dr Subranda Swaminathan.
“We told people not to prescribe,” said Public Health Director Dr.
Selvavinayagam.
“We have the capacity to test three lakh RPCR a day.
Free in the GHS,” he said.
