Colombo: At least 16 people have died in floods and landslides in Sri Lanka following more than a week heavy rain, officials said Wednesday.
The disaster management center said more than 5,000 people had been displaced from their homes and had been sheltered in relatives or a government assistance center managed.
Most deaths have occurred because of drowning strikes and lightning.
At least one person is reported missing.
October and November usually the Northeast rainy season in Sri Lanka.
However, higher rainfall than is usually reported in most countries this year.
