New Delhi: People who need ICU care during Covid-19 treatment continue to have symptoms, both physically and psychologically, for more than a year.
This has been disclosed in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
This study was based on follow-up years from 246 Covid-19 patients who needed ICU maintenance.
Physical symptoms are seen among the restored patients including the emergence of weakness, joint pain, muscle pain, among others.
Some of them also complain about anxiety and depression.
Although this research was conducted among citizens of the Netherlands, doctors said the findings apply among Indian patients as well.
Dr.
Anoop Misra, Chair of Fortis C-Doc, said physical symptoms are very common in those who suffer from severe diseases due to real inflammation in blood vessels, muscle loss during hospitalization and recovery, uncontrolled diabetes and uncontrolled nutrients.
“We have reported the same thing in patients with diabetes with severe symptoms.
Good nutrition, muscle recovery rehabilitation plan, control of comorbid disease and psychological counseling help,” he added.
In Jama’s study, the researchers noted that 182 of 245 (74%) of patients had physical symptoms.
Mental symptoms were reported by 26% and cognitive symptoms of 16% of patients were restored.
“Overall, 30.6% of the survivors report symptoms in at least two domains, and 10.5% experience symptoms in the three domains a year after treatment in the ICU.
In addition, 57.8% of the survivors, employed before receipt of ICU , report a problem related to work (such as working less than before or still on sick leave), “added study.
Dr Neeraj Nischal, additional professor, the Department of Medicine in AIIMS, said the persistence of physical symptoms was common in patients who remained in the treatment of old ICU.
“In the case of Covid-19, research shows there is also an increase in the incidence of psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression.
People need to take it seriously and seek medical assistance for it.
Having a positive view and family support help,” he added.
The World Health Organization (Europe) shows that one can manage post-covid complications itself with a guide from a treating doctor.
The policy document issued by the United Nations Health Agency last year in self-management after Covid’s related disease stated that it generally suffered shortness of breath after being in the hospital.
“Loss of strength and fitness when you are not healthy, and the disease itself, it can mean you become panting easily.
Felt panting can make you feel anxious, who can make shortness of breath worse,” he added.
WHO advisor said the exercise was an important part of recovery after severe Covid-19 disease.
This helps improve fitness, improve thinking, reduce stress and increase food, increase confidence and overall energy, among others.
