Kolkata: West Bengal Heritage Commission (WBHC) has decided to preserve the building in 13, Bidhan Sarani (now 13a Bidhan Sarani) where Ganguly Kadambini has ever lived.
Before Google marked the alert of the birth of 160 from one of the first Indian female doctors on July 18, Great Great Great Dwarakanath and Kadambini Ganguly, Rajib Gangulee had written an email to the minister’s chairman expressing concern the demolition of the class II legacy building was a witness to many historical events.
WBHC is now trying to track the current owner so that conservation work can begin earlier.
The house was originally owned by the Gobindo Gupta Barrister.
“During the 1870s, it belonged to Rashbehari and Bipinbehari Laha from the famous family of Laha,” Gangulee said.
Lahas rented a house to Sadharon Brahmo Samaj.
Many members of Brahmo Samaj will stay here.
Gangulee’s great grandparents used to live in this house between 1885 and 1898.
“Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury lived there for ten years.
Five of his children, including Sukumar Ray, was born there,” he said.
At present, this house is located in neglect.
The Chairman of the WBHC Shuvaprasna was sad that such a building was on the verge of destruction even though it was declared a class II legacy building in 1997.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that we save buildings that have historical interests.
I will soon start working to track the owner of this building and Seeing how it can be preserved.
Along with an engineer, I will visit the Studio Gopeswar Paul in Kumartuli on Tuesday and see how repair work can begin immediately, “he said.
Swaripnali Chattopadhya, Purono Administrator Kolkatar Golpo on Facebook, described it as a “symbol” of Bengal Renaissance.
“Everyone who lives in this building has contributed to Renaissance Bengal.
Heritage buildings are very important should never be ignored this way.”
