Hijab Row: PU Dept. to discuss uniforms for students

Bengaluru: Following the recent controversy in PU colleges through the use of headscarves by several students, the Ministry of Education PU plans to increase problems with the Minister of Education at the next meeting.
In discussions, the department plans to propose uniform recognition for PU students.
“We will take this problem.
We will see if we can propose uniforms, maybe from the upcoming academic year,” said Snehal R, Director, Department of Public Education Education.
He, however, said the department had not formulated recommendations for the proposal.
Muslim students from Udupi PU College have not attended classes for three weeks after they were not allowed to wear a hijab to class.
This is not the first time this problem raised his head in Karnataka.
In January 2021, in Pompei College in Aikala, several students began to do Saffron Shawl, because students from the minority community wore a headscarf to campus.
There was an incident in 2016 also where a pharmaceutical college in Valachil, Dakshina Kannada District, prohibited students from wearing a hijab and in other first-class students in Bellare wearing a infidel scarf.
However, uniforms in PU colleges have become a highly debated topic.
While one part argued that uniformly reduced teenagers’ freedom of universities, the department in previous years decided to conflict with fears because there was concern that universities would force students to buy uniforms, thus turning it into a profitable business.
St Joseph’s PU College, one of the first PU colleges in the city to start a uniform on campus, said it had provided a formal structural institution.
“Our students from school boys have uniforms until grade 10.
When they come to PU College, we think we can continue with the system, provide a formal and professional look.
It also brings discipline in the classroom, something that students must have when they have They move forward in life, “said FR Roshan Pereira, Director, St Joseph’s PU College, Bengaluru.
But there is education that chooses to be different.
“Uniforms have meaning in school, when children are not mature.
During the student’s dress does not block the teaching and learning process in college, and does not endanger peers, there should be no problem with it.
This will violate the basic rights of individuals – rights They are for the choice of clothing and the right to follow certain faiths, “said Niranjanaradhya VP, education.
Signaturecampiid campaigns against hatred, social initiatives, have initiated signature drives that condemned discrimination against Muslim students wearing headscarves, especially in Udupi, where female students have been rejected access to the classroom.
They call it an open violation of Article 25 of the Constitution.
This campaign has collected more than 1,000 signatures so far.
College held a meeting to complete other publishing efforts made on Wednesday to complete the row of hijabs in the government PU College for girls, Udupi.
Principal Rudre Gowda, said the round of other meetings was held before government officials, including the assistant Commissioner, Tahsildar, representatives of the minority welfare department, parents and six students.
Assistant Commissioners interact with students.
Decided to students can wear a headscarf in class, however, as the teacher arrives and the class starts, they must delete it.
If they don’t agree to this, they have to wait for government orders.
They can also wear headscarves during sports days, cultural days or other social meetings.
The principal said only six students refused to enter the class if they were not allowed to wear a headscarf.
About 75 other Muslim students attended classes such as other students, said Rudre Gowda.
