Himachal Pradesh: Nauni Varsity to start fish farming; Farmers and students benefit

Shimla: To increase farmer income from Agri-horticulture and allied activities, Horticulture and Forestry Dr.
Y Parmar in Nauni in Solan Regency has started fish farming in farm ponds at the university.
Recently, the University introduced 3,000 fingerlings from four enhanced strains and fish varieties at the university.

Deputy Chancellor Parvinder Kaushal said that the university had taken this initiative to add agri-horticulture, forestry and milk activities.
He said that fisheries are combined with agriculture, horticulture, and dairy activities can lead to a substantial increase in agricultural income.
He said that the main objective was to establish a culture of commercial fish and production demonstration units on the scientific path and conduct research work on improving the maintenance of fish and breeding technology to fill the research gap through new technology interventions.
He said that the university was looking for a model of an integrated agricultural system based on fish culture by including backyard poultry and duck culture in the future.
This will help to expand the genetic base of fish with universities and to provide training to farmers, especially unemployed young people from the country, which will, in turn, go far to increase fish culture areas and increase fish production and productivity and increase.
