Home: RC with QR code, DL chipless in Delhi

New Delhi: From the “faceless” service, the Delhi government transportation department has moved towards the “chip-less” driving license and will immediately apply to the QR-based code registration certificate.
The department has taken different steps to conduct transactions related to transportation simpler and hassle free to the public.
It has begun to issue a QR-based driving license, which will open the way for a similar vehicle registration certificate from the vehicle dealer.
Ashish Kundrra, Secretary of the President Commissioner, said the department has moved from a smart-based chip card to a QR-based driving license because the chip is an option to store information, which can also be done with a QR code, but in a much simpler way.
“The chip is tarnished and requires card readers and saved information not widely used.
Also, writing on the chip requires certain types of software,” Kundra said.
“Print QR codes like normal printing on plastic cards.
It’s easier, faster and the same job is done,” he said, adding that it would work if someone could “read” QR-based menu in a restaurant.
Kundra said that in the end, it would help in printing the registration certificate at the end of the dealer.
He said the biggest obstacle in allowing the system was chip because it was difficult to provide software in so many locations.
The option to write on the chip is only available in 12 locations where the motorcycle license officer.
More new and simpler technology is needed to provide similar facilities around 100 locations.
“It’s simpler, better and easier to read with any cellular handheld devices, including the phone” he said, adding that the provisions to allow the QR code have become part of the central motorized vehicle rule, but it is not applied in Delhi until recently recently .
In the initial order this year, the department has appointed a “self-registration” dealer as a special registration authority under the Rules of the 1993 Delhi motorized vehicle to issue temporary registration of new non-transportation vehicles (private) sold from their outlets.
The QR code will also store information about the blood group of license holders and if it is willing to donate organs.
