Salem: Among the words of migrating birds and butterfly kaleidoscope in the Salem Forest, two new visitors are seen during the census on birds and butterflies – green pigeon breasts and white cabbage white butterflies.
The two higher altitude occupants, were surprises to find experts who were part of the census between December 17, 19, 2021, throughout the Salem Forest division.
“Green Pigeon pretends orange usually found in the south of the Himalayas and across the parts of Indian and Southeast Asian continents,” said K Gautam, District Forest Officer (DFO), Salem Forest Division.
These birds are found in pairs or in small herds, flying quickly and hardly make a stopover.
“These birds have sharp judders on their wings because they fly very fast,” he said.
Ornithological experts say these birds are generally found in large quantities in the Himalayas lower and in the south especially in western and eastern Ghats.
“These birds are found in Sri Lankan forests.
We suspect these birds may come from Sri Lankan forests,” said an ornithologist, which is part of the team.
Officials found 147 butterfly varieties in the forest, including the white butterflies of Indian cabbage that had been known to live at an altitude of nearly 2,000 sea levels found for the first time in the Salem Forest.
“These butterflies are usually found in the Himalayan region, China, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sikkim and Bhutan,” said DFO.
Planting, these butterflies lay eggs on it and have been named after vegetables.
“The Agriculture Community will confirm their plants, but these butterflies do not cause damage to plants Salem, 49 of the states, districts and other countries.
During the drive, officials also found 147 butterfly varieties.
The official team included 40 forest personnel and 83 experts separated to 16 teams and traveled across 1,24,763 hectares of forest.
