Bengaluru: June 1927 and Mahatma Gandhi camped at Kumara Krupa’s guest house here on the advice of the doctor followed poor health.
But he took 45 minutes from every night to visit what today is the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) in Adugodi.
He posed for a photo together with a fellow Freedom Fighter Madian Mohan Malaaviya and a cow named Jill, turned the animal into a celebrity last night.
As part of his southern Indian tour to promote the Movement of Khadi, Gandhi came to Prince Mysore’s country, but the doctor advised him a tight break after he experienced a mild stroke.
He decided to go to Hills Nandi for a break and arrive at Yeshwantpur train station on March 20, 1927 on his way to the hill.
But he cut his Nandi hill stay and returned to town on June 5.
He recovered at the guesthouse under the care of the famous surgeon, Dr.
Subbaro Hospital Victoria.
In his Kannada book, Bengalurinalli Mahatma Gandhi, which was published in 2004, Semashekar’s vemagal histora has recorded an unexpected meeting at the Guest House between Gandhi and William Smith, a Scottish director of the Imperial Institute of Animal Peteral and the Cooling Area (now Southern Regional Station of NDRI).
“Smith and the veterinarian team was impressed with the knowledge of Gandhiji cattle and invited him to the Dairy Institute.
Mahatma managed to convince his doctor that he would spend 45 minutes at the Institute every day,” Somashekar said.
As per the record in NDRI, Gandhi visits him every day from 12 to 19 June.
The last day at the facility with Malaiviya was historical.
“Gandhiji was introduced with a cow named Jill which was a crossbreed Ayrshire and Haryana and quite celebrities at the Institute.
He has given birth to 16 calves and remains disease free and is a subject of research for veterinarians not only in Bangalore but throughout the country.
It was noted that he gave 10,000 Milk pounds every year, “said the author and Gandhian Somashekar.
On Sunday night, Gandhi enthusiastically posed with Jill with Pandit Malaiviya and black and white photos into sensations throughout the country after being published in Kannada and England pressing the following days.
Jill continued to bear the 17th calf before dying.
Sexettes of cattle are named after him at the Institute, with details of his life, including the most famous visitors.
