BENGALURU: Sharanaiah, 103, from Indiranagar, Bengaluru, did not panic when he tested positive for Covid or when he suffered breathlessness.
He was taken to a Covid Care Centre on Primrose Road by the BBMP and later shifted to an ESI Hospital for further care.
“The BBMP facility was no less than any private hospital.
I was given the best care,” said Sharanaiah, who was in the hospital for 20 days before returning home on May 22.
Eranna, 103, and Eramma, 101, from Sandur in Ballari recovered with just home isolationSimilarly, a centenarian couple from Tumbarguddi village in Sandur taluk of Ballari district put up a brave front and defeated the virus.
Eranna, 103, and Eramma, 101, were home-isolated, with permission from the state government.
Eranna and Eramma tested positive for Covid-19 on May 17.
They were looked after by their grandson Dr T Bharat Kumar.
WAR ROOM DATACovid-19 death rate among 100+ is 5%They were not admitted to hospital and we kept updating local doctors,” said M Tippeswamy, a high school headmaster and Eranna’s son.
The couple were monitored by the village taskforce committee and healthcare workers used to visit their house every day, said health department officials.
As per the state war room data, only seven of the 140 people above the age of 100 who contracted Covid died as on June 7.
The case fatality rate in those aged above100 is 5%.
Roshan R, Sharanaiah’s grandson, said that his grandfather was taken to a care centre.
He had tested positive along with two other family members on May 2.
He had cold, cough, fever, chest pain and the oxygen saturation level dropped to 79%.
“That was the peak of the pandemic, but we got bed at CCC.
My grandfather required an oxygenated bed and he was further shifted to ESI Hospital, Indiranagar.
He had the willpower to live on,” said Roshan.
Sharanaiah, who was a Sanskrit teacher, has no comorbidities.
According to geriatrician Dr Anoop Amarnath, a member of the state’s critical support group for Covid treatment, good recovery among the elderly may be aided by immunosenescence — the gradual deterioration of the immune system brought on by the natural age advancement.
“With this, the cytokine storm markers are much lesser among elderly patients.
Cytokine storm occurs with the immune reaction.
Immunosenescence –– the ageing of the immune system –– may offer some benefits in the elderly with Covid.
We are seeing multiple such cases on the ground,” he said.
