New Delhi: The day of international wetlands on Wednesday came as a reminder that wetlands in Delhi were damaged by encroachment and pollution, which delayed the process of telling them.
Less workers to manage wetlands, and covid pandemics only make this problem worse, officials said.
According to RTI, only eight wetlands were told throughout the country since the 2017 wetland regulations were informed.
Delhi also aims to notify 1,040 wetlands and 10 have been prioritized, but no one is notified.
Experts, however, said they were still hoping for wetland conservation in the city.
For wetland notification, short documents are prepared first based on land work done to prepare the final concept.
Public opinion was then sought and finally, the Ministry of Environment Union told it.
“So far, 650 short documents have been obtained.
The good thing is that we have 1,040 wetlands on the record.
We have not carried out truthing land from most of these wetlands, and 10 wetlands are prioritized on criteria and parameters such as areas, biodiversity, existing rights, etc.
We are sure they will be notified soon, “said Dr.
Madhu Verma, chief economist at the World Resource Institute, Delhi who led the technical committee on wetlands.
Officials said it was not ascertained how much wetlands in Delhi had been interrupted.
“Wetlands are often ignored.
Only after notification, all implementation of illegal construction or encroachment can be done,” said environmental lovers and Akash Vashistha lawyers.
