HYD: Dengue patients face platelet shortages

Hyderabad: Dengue fever patients are now stung with platelet deficiencies because demand has regarding the roof.
Many families have to call their relatives and friends from other cities to come and donate.
Hunting for very important blood components has also been hit by several hospitals that do not want to accept them from their own blood banks.
“The doctors said they did not receive blood or platelets from outside because they were not sure whether all blood banks tested the donor for Covid-19.
With this long exercise to reach relatives, friends and support groups begin.
In the end, we can get relatives from Nizamabad to contribute, “Yousuf Shareef said desperately looking for O-negative donors.
In another example, a family must fly in relatives from Bangalore.
“We reach all our contacts.
Even though we can connect to several donors from a positive group, but they are not in the city or recently donated.
In the end, a friend brought his travel plan and came to donate,” said Mithra Rao.
While usually someone has a 1.5 lakh platelet range up to 4.5 lakh, in the case of dengue fever patients, this can go down to as low as 5,000.
“Thrombocytes play an important role in preventing bleeding.
Bleeding is rare for platelet counts above 30,000 / cc, but a lower amount may require transfusion,” said Dr.
Arshad Punjukani, doctor consultant and diabetology, Yashoda Hospital.
