HYDERABAD: Regardless of the previous year’s flooding which exposed the town’s urban heritage, growth and maintenance of drains, and which is a must for preventing flooding, is progressing at a snail’s speed.
With barely any time left to the monsoon to get there, residents are concerned about a rerun of this 2020 flood scenario.
At Toli Chowki’s Nadeem Colony, that bore the brunt of all of the significant flooding in recent decades — 2000, both 2008 and 2020 — inhabitants continue to stay amidst leaky drains, choked socket stations, obvious dumping of debris along with degradation of inlet and outlet channels because of uncontrolled structures and encroachments.
Mohammed Iqbal (57), a resident of this colony, stated “In October this past year, the storms increased water level from the coil nalas and Shah Hatim talab (lake) since the whole water in the upstream flowed down .
Our homes got bombarded as the water rose into the ceiling, nearly 10-12 feet high, resulting in large destruction.
With irregular rains in the past couple of days, the drains from the region are once more overflowing.
” Remembering the damaging floods of this past year, the citizens expected the government to take strict steps to prevent flooding.
“Even though the nala desilting work is occurring at a snail’s speed, the civic body is lagging behind in executing the stormwater empty undertaking,” said Iqbal.
A couple of km awayin Baba Nagar’s B-block, Intermediate pupil Fatima Sultana stated “My family had to spend days on the patio after the whole home was submerged in warm water this past year.
” SNDP leader Professor C Vasantha explained,”Though we’re going towards monsoon, it is going to take some time because we must perform the specialized analysis, procurement, procurement of stuff, etcfor implementation of this undertaking ”
