Iceland chooses in volatile elections with a climate in mind

Reykjavík, Iceland: Iceland chose Saturday in general elections dominated by climate change, with a number of unprecedented political parties to win parliamentary seats.
Polling shows there will be no direct winner, triggering complex negotiations to build a coalition government.
A record of nine parties can cross the 5% threshold needed to qualify for seats in the Icelandic Parliament, Olthing.
The beginner belongs to the socialist party, which promises to shorten the timer and nationalize the Icelandic fisheries industry.
High elections are expected, because one fifth of eligible voters have thrown outdated ballots.
Climate change is high among serial concerns in Iceland, a volcanic island studded with a glacier of around 350,000 people in the North Atlantic.
A very warm summer by Iceland’s standards – 59 days of temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius (68 F) and a shrink glacier have helped encourage global warming on the political agenda.
Polling shows strong support for leaning-lean parties that promise to cut carbon emissions with more than Iceland who have committed under the Paris climate agreement.
The country promised to be a carbon neutral in 2040, a decade in front of most other European countries.
The current government is a three-party coalition which includes a political spectrum from left to right and led by Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir from the left green party.
It was formed in 2017 after years of political instability.
Jakobsdottir remains a popular prime minister, but the poll shows his party can depart badly, ending the ongoing coalition.
“This country faces a big decision when we turn away from a pandemic,” said Jakobsdottir during the television debate on Friday night where party leaders vowed to end Iceland’s dependence on oil and many wanted to raise taxes to rich people.
