Kolkata: Scientists at Ihiest Shibpur began to collect rainwater on the roof, filter through the plants they had made and recharge the underground aquifers containing drinking water.
IHIEST is the first Central Institute to start the underground water refill project under Jal Prime Minister Shakti Abhiyan.
This project was assigned this week.
The researchers studied underground water tables and found that aquifer – pure water on drinking quality – is 260 feet below the surface.
Faculty and researchers from the Civil Engineering Department, who have formed the Works Institute Department, set pipes that will take rain water from the surface pool directly to the aquifer.
The entire room is 6,000 square feet on the roof of the science building and technology cleaned for the project.
Special pipes are installed to collect rainwater from the roof to the pool below.
“We let the roof cleaned with rain and prevent dirty water flow into the pool.
When the roof is cleaned, the key is open so that water can collect in the pool,” said Tapas Kumar Roy, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, who led the project.
Faculty members think that such rain filling projects can solve the water crisis in the city.
Commissioner of Corporation Howrah Municipal, D Jain, said he would gladly explore the project.
