Hyderabad: In the first collaborative effort in the country, the top state institution will use artificial intelligence (AI) in road safety to reduce accidents.
International Information Technology Institute-Hyderabad (IIIT-H) together with Giant Giant Intel, NMC (Nagpur Municipal Corporation) and the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), among other partners, has launched the Project Irise (smart solution for road safety through Technology and Engineering) in Nagpur.
As part of this project, partners will utilize the technology of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce the incident of road accidents around 50% in the city of Nagpur in the next two years and make a model that can be improved and replicated throughout the country, Nivruti Rai, Head of State, Intel India and Vice President, Intel Foundry Service, said Monday.
Irise will focus on three key aspects – vehicle safety, analysis of road infrastructure mobility and safety.
Under this project, the NMC vehicle fleet will be equipped with a collision avoidance system, a subset of advanced driving aid systems (fennel), which can reduce accidents and approach misses up to 60%.
At present, around 30 buses in Nagpur are equipped with these devices and this will be upgraded to around 350 in the coming days.
These sensors will also help map the current accident-prone area and the possibility of an accident zone throughout the road network, helping road maintenance institutions to intervene in the early stages and go for preventive maintenance.
Shekhar C Mande, DG, CSIR, said, “CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) will assist in identifying accident-prone locations and also evaluating the driver’s behavior before and after the installation of a collision avoidance system in their vehicle.
This project can be copied in various cities .
“While Intel India will bring his ADAS technology, CRRI will leverage its domain expertise in road Engineering and IIIT-Hyderabad-based AI will conduct research to address population-scale road safety through applied AI research.
In fact, Mahindra & Mahindra will carry out the safety of the road public awareness and driver training program in Nagpur.
