VARANATION: Researchers in the Electrical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology (University of Banaras Hindu) have developed new technology for vehicle onboard chargers.
They claim that this technology costs around half of current onboard charger technology and will reduce the cost of two-wheeled and four-wheeled electric vehicles.
Rajeev Kumar Singh, Associate Professor and Chief Project Investigator, said, “Amid the increasing costs of petroleum products and increasing levels of pollution, electric vehicles (EVS) are the best alternatives for conventional IC machines, but the lack of high-power off-board charging.

“The development of the lab scale has been carried out in IIT (BHU) and upgrades and commercialization are underway.
The leading electric vehicle manufacturer also shows interest in this new technology and is ready to develop full commercial products that can be applied to existing electrical vehicles.

The innovative technology of the Institute will also contribute to the government’s e-mobility mission.

He explained that electric vehicles contribute to sustainable development because it improves public health to eliminate tailpipe emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and, with renewable energy integration into existing electricity networks, lower electricity tariffs can be reduced.

One of the projects is Averera, which has won the first global prize at the Eco Marathon Shell last year.
He further said that IIT (BHU) plans to establish an interdisciplinary center on EV technology to carry out design, fabrication, and testing the battery management system, commercializing research, providing solutions to R & D problems and developing human resources in the area.
