IIT-K develops a strong and sustainable mechanism to check the health of River Ganga

Completed / Alvi Times News Network Kanpur: To study the impact of environmental changes in the river ecosystem, IIT-Kanpur has developed an autonomous water observatory named ‘Niracara Svayamsasita Vedh Shala (NSVS) to monitor real-time data transmission and Ganges river-based visualization.

Harish, Dean, Research and Development, Iit-Kanpur at The Laxman Ghat of Bithoor on October 31.
The project is being carried out by teams of earth scientists, mechanics, electricity, and aerospace engineers from IIT-Kanpur, led by Prof.
Bishakh Bhattacharya as the main researcher.
The NSV iit-Kanpur system was developed as a cheap water quality monitoring platform, multi-parameter, which consisted of various automatic sensors and samplers placed on a semi-submersible stationary platform, all weather, strong, and very stable.
Abhay Karandikar, Director, Iit-Kanpur said, “Ganga is not only a river but cultural heritage for us, and, therefore, is our responsibility to save him from all dangers.
Iit-Kanpur has conducted strict research and developed various mechanisms for Study the Ganga Ecosystem and the impact of climate change on it.

Bishakh Bhattacharya about the inauguration of the NSV system, which will ensure monitoring Ganga in real-time, in-situ to ensure its good health.
“In its current capacity.
This, the NSVS system can feel three important parameters, namely, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen capacity.
This can be used further to estimate total dissolved solids (TDS), specific gravity and metal ions in water.
Autonomous systems collect data every fifteen minutes and report it through a wireless network to the Institute.
For self-sustenance, this platform is equipped with an energy harvesting system consisting of solar cells and unique vortex induction vibration systems that can extract energy from the river flow.
This system has an open platform architecture so that other institutes develop sensors can integrate them with the IITK system in collaborative mode.
This development is in line with the belief that in Indian children, cleaning and rejuvenating the health of Ganga ecosystems is a focal point, which is often damaged by some major challenges including inadequate skilled workers, integrated data resolution, and water sampling capacity to request .
This project has been sponsored jointly by the Department of Science and Technology, the Indian government and IUSSTF- Indo-u.

IIT-Kanpur also recently launched ‘Ganga Atlas’ and workflows that allow users to process and analyze the declassification image of the river environment at a minimum cost, using open source software.
Previously, Iit-Kanpur conducted a research on high resilience of heavy metals dissolved in Ganga, the impact of the soaking of the corpse on the river and held a ranthable discussion on Rivulet rejuvenation in Ganga Basin; Among other initiatives.
In sustainable efforts to overcome climate change in India, Iit-Kanpur also signed the MoU with the Delhi government to examine Delhi air pollution.
