Chennai: Kamakoti Veezhinathan, a professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was appointed as the new Director of IIT Madras.
Veezhinathan led the research team that designed the first Indian Microprocessor Microprocessor first, which could help reduce dependence on imported microprocessors in the communications and defense sectors.
An alumni of IIT Madras and an expert in artificial intelligence, Veezhinathan was appointed as the Head of the AI Task Force by the Ministry of Trade Union and also members of the National Security Advisory Board.
At present, he associates the Dean of Industrial Consultation and Sponsored Research (ICSR) in IIT Madras.
Saying Marry Verezhinathan to his appointment, the Director of Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, “With Kamakoti in a helmet, Iit Madras is ready for a new altitude scale in the coming years.
He is an extraordinary teacher and researcher and administrator.
He has played a major role in many projects National, bringing its deep expertise in computing and cybersecurity.

” As a native population of Wisnupuram in Thiruvarur District, Veezhinathan completed a study of undergraduate in computer science and engineering at Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, University of Madras, in 1989 and a Master of Science (based on research) and PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras on In 1992 and 1995.
He joined IIT Madras as assistant professor in 2001.
Many of his awards included Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship in 2020, Iesa Techno Visionary Award in 2018, the IBM faculty award in 2013 and Drdo Academy Excellence.
His predecessor, Ramamurthi, has completed 10 years or two terms as IIT-M director.
During his term, the Institute was ranked number among technical institutions for six consecutive years in NIRF ranking, the overall top institute over the past three years and the top of the innovative institutions over the past three years in the Atal Innovation (Aria).
He also oversees the expansion of fast campus infrastructure including a 1,000 crore satellite campus near Chennai.
