New Delhi: Madras Institute of Technology India (IIT) has crossed 1,000-mark in patents produced by it in India and abroad, officials said.
The number of patents submitted by the Institute also multiplied in the last five years with US accounting for the highest number of patents submitted outside India.
As on March 31 this year, the total number of patents submitted in India is 1,204 and the total number of international patents submitted are 529.
Of these, 155 patent applications are submitted in the US.
IIT-Madras bear 70 percent of the cost of submitting foreign patents with the inventor that bears the rest.

“Another important factor is a large number of international patents (218) submitted under the Patent of Agreement Cooperation (PCT).
PCT helps applicants in seeking patent protection internationally for their findings.
By submitting an international patent application under PCT, applicants can then search Protection for discovery in all countries that partyed to PCT (153 countries, like today), “said Ravindra Gettu, Dean, the ICSR center.
Gettu said the center had done many initiatives in recent years to encourage increased patents submitted in India and abroad.
“Dedicated IP cells have been established at the Industrial Consultation Center and Sponsored Research (ICSR), which conducted an intellectual property awareness program (IP) regularly to exercise students or faculties about the importance of IP and monetization protection,” he said.
Gettu said the Institute had allowed submission of patents through awareness campaigns among faculty and student members.
“The process has also been made easier and faster, without disturbing the settlement of publications and theses, which is often the main focus of our researchers.
IP monetization is also a recent focus area to promote shutdown and fund more development,” he said.
