Thiruvananthapuram: The gangaya canal that overflows and causes flooding at home, shops and fishing centers in Vizhinjam in a heavy shower on Saturday is a sick reminder of the construction of an invalid structure and waste disposal that blocks the flow of water.
Officials with small irrigation departments say that one of the main reasons for abundant canals is the accumulation of sand in the part where the channel flows close to the sea.
There is a small bridge built unsciently throughout the canal without getting sanctions from the authorities concerned.
These bridges are located at a low level and without vertical permission.
Often disposing of waste on the canal causes clogged garbage in the structure, blocking the flow of canals.
The absence of a retaining wall on both sides of the canal was also quoted as a reasons for flooding.
Residents, street vendors and fishermen have long been at the end of the recipient whenever the canal overflows during the rainy season.
The fishermen who keep their expensive fishing equipment in the landing center and the dressing room often end up losing their livelihoods when the canal will flood all buildings in neighboring areas.
It was in 2020 that sanctions were given to refueling Gangayaar canals at 89 lakh Rs costs.
The tender was invited twice for this work and in the third tender there were two participants.
The lowest quote was recorded at RS 1.05 Crores.
The quoted amount was 32.74% higher than the estimated RS 79.46 lakh.
The Department of Water Resources has considered excessive demand and assessed that the amount quoted for the project was fair and the number was approved in August 2021 as a special case in the condition that the government would not have financial obligations and that Chief Engineers could examine measurements.
According to the scheme, the desilting process will be made for a distance of 1 kilometer.
A new bridge will also find a canal.
One of the unauthorized bridges was damaged in heavy rain on Saturday.
To prevent invalid waste disposal, the fence must be established on both parties.
The core wall will be built from the channel to the sea for a distance of 60 meters.
This will be built in the same canal alignment and will be similar to Breakwater.
Officials say that work on canal restoration will begin immediately after approval is accepted regarding the level.
On Saturday after the flood water entered the shops, houses and the landing center damaged fishing equipment and livelihoods of fishermen, Mayor Arya Rajendran, Deputy Mayor of P K Raju and the Chairman of the Committee of the Keep Welfare H Salim visited the place.
Following, official irrigation department officials and corporate officials deployed the drive from the canal and pieces of plastic waste taken from the canal.
