Chennai: Napier Bridge, one of the oldest and iconic structures of the city, is now a place for selfies at night.
The bridge has turned on at night as part of Chennai Corporation’s efforts to install dynamic lighting on the bridge and flyover in the city.
On most nights and weekends, some cars and two-wheeled cars can be seen parked on the bridge, with several family jostling for a living room near the bridge to click on the image.
The authority of the civil body said that the crowd is expected when they come with a dynamic lighting project.
Makeover images have seen dynamic lighting on flyovers, class separators, rails on bridges (Robs) and subways throughout the city.
“In big cities around the world, the bridge is seen as an icon, such as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
Napier Bridge has become one of the structures in Chennai.
Dynamic lighting seems to have added aesthetics,” said an engineer with the bridge of the corporate department.
While lighting has occurred since the beginning of this year, the consistent locking and closing of the Marina Beach to the public means that most of the city’s population does not know the lighting project on the bridge.
“I didn’t realize the lighting on the bridge.
When I visited the beach recently with my family and driving back home, we stopped by the bridge to click Selfie,” said J Kaushik, a resident of Velachery.
While the lighting on the bridge definitely attracts visitors, incidents of people who slip into the coout river while taking photos have also been recorded.
About three weeks ago, on August 10, a casual worker from the period fell into the river while taking a selfie from the wall of the parapet wall.
He has waited for the mud in his neck for about eight hours before he was saved.
The police said that they had to ask people to disperse at the end hours due to security issues.
