Bhubaneswar: A research team from the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) Bhubaneswar has identified specific proteins in living organisms that can be targeted to combat infection.
This research has been published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Narottam Acharya from the ILS Laboratory for the instability and genome disease, which leads the research team, the word nuclear antigen that breed (PCNA) is a protein that plays an important role in DNA replication, improvement, and the recombination process of all organisms.
“To block the DNA replication process, we must target important PCNA proteins in any way.
If we get success in inhibiting the function of PCNA, it will be easy to overcome infection in living organisms including humans,” Acharya said.

He said the PCNA structure looks similar in all species.
“But our research found that PCNA of certain species rarely functions elsewhere , genetically, and biocimically prove this in our study, “he added.
He said this study clarified that drugs could be developed to target PCNA that attacked pathogens with only human cells that covered the side.
“Now PCNA hinders drugs targeting both pathogens that attack such as viruses, mushrooms and bacteria, and human cells.
This creates side effects among humans.
But our research will provide hope to drug developers to make obstacles that target PCNA from pathogens that attack only , “he added.
This PCNA is also present in mushrooms that cause mukormycosis.
“We can only target PCNA from mushrooms to stop their growth in the human body.
Inhibiting drugs will not affect human cells.
We plan to work on drug development to deactivate PCNA from pathogens without targeting human cell PCNA.
It will not make side effects between patients, “He added.
The researchers said this study would also help in cancer treatment.
