New Delhi: The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Georgieva has announced that Gita Gopinath, chief economist and director of the first research department of funds, intends to go in January 2022 and return to the economic department of Harvard University as planned when the public leaves the service ends.
Harvard University has extended Gopinath’s leave because it was extraordinary in one year, which allowed him to serve as chief economist at the IMF for three years.
“Gita’s contribution to our funds and membership is truly extraordinary – quite simple, the impact on the IMF work is extraordinary,” said Georgieva.
Searching for successors will begin soon.
Gopinath did BA (Hons) in the economic field of Lady Delhi Shri Ram College and then Ma from Delhi School and Washington University.
IMF MD said Gopinath also worked tirelessly with other IMF departments to connect with policy makers, academics, and other stakeholders about the new analytical approach to help the state respond to international capital flow through an integrated policy framework.
He also helped establish a climate change team in the IMF to analyze, among others, the optimal climate mitigation policy.
US National and foreign Indian citizens, Gopinath’s research has been published in many of the top economic journals.
Before his appointment as Head of the IMF economist, he was the professor of International Studies and Economy John Zawaanstra, at the Harvard Economic Department.
He was a scholar of a visit at the IMF and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, a member of the New York Federal Reserve Bank Economic Advisor, an economic advisor to the chairman of the Minister of Kerala, and members of the leading community advisory group in the G-20 Ministry of India.
Before joining the University of Harvard faculty in 2005, he was an economic professor assistant at the School of Business University of Chicago.
