Gurugram: Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will soon launch a cellular app to maintain trees in urban areas of the city, including them along the way.
As part of the project, the survey will be carried out in the next few weeks to find out the number of trees in urban areas which fall under the Jurisdiction of GMDA and Corporate City of Gurugram (MCG) and ensure their protection.
However, the project will not cover forest areas.
This application, which has been developed exclusively for tree enumeration, will record all tree details, including high, thickness, age, species, health and location.
This exercise will help the authorities maintain data on trees and assess the extent to which green closure in Gurugram.
Residents can also download the application and see tree details in the city.
“Our team will mention trees on the threshold of the main road in the GMDA and MCG area.
This application is ready and will be launched soon.
We will start the survey in mid-September.
We are waiting for a monsoon to subside, after that we will start working,” said Subhas Yadav , Nodal Environmental GMDA and sustainability wing.
The surveyor only requires an Android smartphone where the application has been installed.
They will be able to fill the tree details in the application, such as their common and botanical names, estimates of age, height, thickness and canopy width, while longitude and latitude will be recorded automatically.
After entering certain plot details, the application will be able to calculate the number of trees within the area.
If it fails from the norm, notification can be sent to the owner, officials said.
If the surveyor is not sure about tree species, this application will also have a 200 tree database found to help identify it, along with detailed photos of easy identifiers such as leaf patterns and stems.
Environmental activists have welcomed moving and said the tree census for each sector in Gurugram is very important to prevent logging of trees.
Every year, more than 1,000 trees are chopped for the construction of the carit parking area in Gurugram, they said.
“The destroyed actions were destroyed from destroying all green covers have made this city unpleaved, irrevocable and with high temperatures in the summer.
The government must take steps to save every tree that might be within the city limits,” Vaishali Rana said, an activist.
