Thiruvananthapuram: The government has started the steps to frame the protocol to carry out gender reassignment operations in the state, after the death of Anannyah Kumari Alex, a transgender who was suspected of committing suicide for undergoing surgery.
Social Justice and Minister of Higher Education R Bindu said in Monday that the Transgender Justice Council, chaired by the Minister, who met on July 23 decided to form an expert committee to make physical and mental recommendations faced by the transgender community and frame the protocol for operation gender rearrance.

Along with health experts, the committee will include transgender representatives and representatives of those who work to lift the transgender community.
The minister said that the Expert Committee would submit the report in three months.
The committee’s recommendation will be examined and the government will take action based on it.
The Board has also entrusted the Director of Social Justice to make the recommendations needed to provide health insurance for members of the Transgender Community and to include them in the priority list of lives mission recipients.
The government has also entrusted the Director of Social Justice to accelerate steps to frame the rules to implement the provisions of Transgender (Rights Protection) Act, 2019, said minister.
In addition, the Board will also urge the Department of Public Education and Height to examine the possibility of entering topics on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics in the education curriculum.
