In COP26, more than 100 countries promised to end deforestation

Glasgow: More than 100 countries are arranged to promise on Tuesday to end deforestation, which scientists say is the main driver of climate change.
England praised commitment as the first major achievement of the UN Climate Conference in Glasgow.
But the campaigners said they needed to see such a detail – the promises were made, and damaged, before.
The British government said it has received commitment from leaders who represent more than 85% of world forests to stop and reverse deforestation in 2030.
More than $ 19 billion of public funds have been promised to plan, supported by countries including Brazil, China, Colombia , Congo, Indonesia, Russia and the United States.
Forests are considered important ecosystems and important ways to absorb carbon dioxide – major greenhouse gases – from the atmosphere.
But the value of wood as a commodity and increasing demand for agricultural and pastoral land leads to logging that is widespread and often illegal, especially in developing countries.
The Human Right Watch campaign group warns that similar agreements in the past have failed to be effective.
Luciana Tellez Chavez, an environmental researcher in the group, said the strengthening of indigenous peoples’ rights would help prevent deforestation and must be part of the agreement.
Alison Hoare, a senior research at the home of the political thought of Chatham House, said the world leaders promised in 2014 to end deforestation in 2030, “but since then deforestation has been accelerated in many countries.” “This new pledge recognizes the various actions needed to protect our forests, including finance, support for rural livelihoods, and strong trade policies,” he said.
“So that it works, the inclusive process and a fair legal framework will be needed, and the government must work with civil society, business and indigenous peoples to approve, monitor and implement it.” About 130 world leaders are in Glasgow for the COP26 summit, which is said by the British host is the last realistic opportunity to maintain global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industry level – the purpose of the world set in Paris six years ago.
On Monday, leaders heard the Stark warning from officials and activists.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson described global warming as a “apocalypse device” which was tied to humanity.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told his colleague that humans “dig our own graves.” And Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley speaks for vulnerable island countries, adding the Moral Thunder, the warning leaders not to “allow the path of greed and selfishness to sow the seeds of our general destruction.” Climate activist Greta Thunberg said to a rally outside the high security climate that the conversation was only “blah blah blah” and will reach a little.
“Changes will not come from inside there,” he told several thousands of protesters who had come to Glasgow to make their voices hear.
“It’s not leadership, this is leadership.
This is what looks like leadership.”
