Nagpur: In the first, an olive for a turtle woman who was successfully marked by satellites in velas, Maharashtra.
This is the first satellite marking of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle on the west coast of India.
Maharashtra Beach has a sporadic nest of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.
Until now, the Ridley Sea Turtles olive was only marked on the east coast of India.
APCCF VIRENDRA TIWARI, which heads Mumbai Mangrove conservation cells, said, “turtles were marked as part of the research project ‘tracking the Ridley Turtle olive migration movement from Maharashtra Beach’.
This study was conducted by the Mangrove Foundation, the Maharashtra Forest Department, and Indian animal institutions (Wii), Dehradun.
This study will help in understanding the pattern of the movement of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle off the coast of West India.
Tiwari said the department planned to mark five olive turtles Ridley sea under this project, where the first had been marked in velas .
“These turtles have been named ‘prathama’ because this is the first to be satellite tagged in Maharashtra, and it also marks the beginning of a new era in turtle conservation in the state,” he said.
Four more Turtle Olive Ridley will be marked on various beaches In Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, where nesting turtles increased due to better conservation efforts.
From 233 Nests in 2018-19, the nest of these species of turtles doubled to 475 in the three districts.
This caused more tattoos to be released to the sea at 2020-21.
APCCF added that the turtle conservation program was run by the Ministry of Forestry along with local communities and NGOs included finding olive ridley nesting sites, excavation, and relocation of eggs to hatching locations.
