Bengaluru: For the first time, female school teachers in India exceeded the number of their male colleagues, according to integrated district information about the school education report (U-DISE) for 2019-20 was released last week.
Of the 96.8 lakh teachers in the country, 49.2 lakh were women.
In 2012-13, there were 35.8 lakh women teachers throughout the country against 42.4 lakh men – marking a grise of more than 37% or 13 lakh for seven years.
In the same period, the number of men’s teachers rose from 42.4 lakh to 47.7 lakh.
However, there are catches: Teacher Top Top Counts are only at the primary level.
This report shows that the top primary and so on, the number of men’s teachers continues to be higher.
At the pre-primary level, the number of women’s teachers stands more than 1 lakh, compared to around 27,000 men.
This ratio is more balanced in the main value, with 19.6 lakh women and 15.7 male lakh teachers.
In the top primary class, there are 11.5 lakh men and 10.6 lakh women’s teachers.
Since then, the gap increases.
In high school, there were 6.3 men’s lakh and 5.2 lakh women’s teachers.
Higher secondary, 3.7 lakh men up to 2.8 lakh women.
In government and school assisted, the number of male teachers is higher while in private schools without assistance, women’s teachers are in front.
The trend of male teachers exceeds the number of women at a higher level seen throughout the state, with the exception of Kerala, Delhi, Meghalaya, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, among major countries.
In these countries, the number of women’s teaching is higher than men even in secondary and medium classes.
“Every dynamic and vital profession, and I consider teaching as one, it must have a fair distribution of men and women.
Children need to learn from teachers who can offer a perspective of men and women.
No doubt in a younger class, many schools in India prefers a female teacher, because they look more care.
However, I think it’s good for a male teacher to show care too! If not, we show a sexist bias that supports female teachers, “said Maya Menon, founder of the Director of the Teacher Foundation.
“In a higher class, where the curriculum load is heavier, traditionally both male teachers and women are sought.
There is also a differential salary in India between elementary and secondary school teachers,” said Menon.
This does not occur in other countries: all teachers regardless of the level they teach need similar qualifications and, therefore, starting with a similar salary.
“Male teachers in India prefer to teach in high school because they are paid more, especially with the government scale.
Private schools that have more teachers of men tend to be an international school where the payment is better than in other private schools,” he said.
U-DISE reports are released every year by the Ministry of Education and Literacy of Schools under the Ministry of Education.
