Chennai: Chairman of Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Agriculture to take the steps needed to improve the planted area of 11.75 lakh hectares in the next ten years.
The area under double planting must be increased from 10 lakh hectares of up to 20 lakh hectares and the total coverage of the area fibers from 60% to 75%.
Assessment must be made in each village and appropriate irrigation facilities must be extended.
He spoke at a review of agriculture at the Secretariat.
“The department is advised to provide adequate inputs such as seeds and fertilizers to supply farmers, and the expansion work of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers must take place without interruption,” said an official release.
The minister’s chairman said Uzhavar Sandhais (farmer market) must function properly and the new market must be made.
Increased technology must be available to increase cotton productivity and sunflower and get Tamil Nadu to three top positions.
Special attention must be paid in agricultural ponds, micro irrigation, special mission for millet, promotion of organic farms and horticultural plants.
The minister’s chairman also reviewed the introduction of e-auction to increase profit margins, increase productivity and units for additional products worth as part of the one-producing-one-regency program, encouraging educated young people to become agricultural entrepreneurs, in addition to long-term schemes.

The Horticulture Department was told to increase production, ensuring the maintenance of the right government botanical gardens, creating marketing opportunities for farmers and expanding adequate infrastructure facilities to store products.
