Bengaluru: India has agreed to further clinical trials for the first MRNA homegrown-19 vaccine-based vaccine developed by Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd, said the government, Tuesday, after the shot was found safe and effective in the initial stage of study.
Gennova is among several pharmaceutical companies throughout the world, including Moderna Inc.
and Pfizer Inc., to use MRNA technology in its Coronavirus shot.
This vaccine does not use life viruses to produce immune responses but fast human body to make proteins that trigger one.
The company said on Tuesday he planned to start the mid-stage trial of the vaccine candidate, HGCO19, in early September around 10 to 15 sites and final stages at 22 for 27 sites in India.
The clinical trial of Gennova vaccine candidate began in December last year and was partly funded by the biotechnology department from India Department of Science and Technology.
“It’s too early to get excited about this vaccine as a phase-3 trial has not been completed.
At the time the vaccine reaches the market, India will be vaccinated the majority of the population with at least one dose,” said Prashant Khadayate, a pharmaceutical analyst at Globaldata.
Developing the MRNA vaccine but will help India “display scientific innovation at the global level”, Khadayate added.
India has so far been official emergency use for two countries developed Covid-19 shots, made by Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila, but did not have a mRNA-based vaccine but in immunization programs ahead of the potential of the third coronavirus wave.
Moderna Vaccine won the emergency use of the Indian government in June, but the company still sorted out issues above compensation and imports.
