India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra explained the explanations for deaths throughout cyclones have shifted through the years with progress in IMD’s prediction abilities.
Before, storm surge has been the significant reason for deaths, but deaths have been caused largely by the meltdown of a tree or even a home today, he explained.
The storms create strong winds which push the water to the beaches, which may result in flooding.
This creates storm strikes very harmful for coastal areas.
