New Delhi: India is one of a number of countries interested in holding an Olympic match in 2036, 2040 and even outside, said the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach.
IOC recently announced that the city of Brisbane will host the summer game 2032.
Even after Brisbane, Australia, was chosen last month to host the summer game 2032, IOC enjoyed the applicant queue to host the Olympics in 2036, 2040 And even outside, said Bach in a report on the ‘Wall Street Journal’.
High aspiring hosts including Indonesia, India, Germany and Qatar, added the report.
“And this only appeared in my mind.
So we are really in a very good long-term position,” Bach said as quoted by WSJ.
Bach’s comments had come at the time of increasing costs, ran into millions of dollars, from the performance of the game had triggered a debate.
The recent Tokyo game also faced protests for the amount of money spent to host the Olympics.
Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Rajeev Mehta confirmed to PTI that they had indeed shown interest in holding a showpiece event.
“In the meeting of Commission IOC through video conferencing before the Tokyo Olympics, IOA has expressed interest in the Olympic hosting in 2036 and so on,” said Mehta.
Delhi Deputy Minister Delhi Manish Sisodia, in March this year, said they would make every effort and improve the infrastructure to manage 2048 matches, to mark 100 years of independence.
India has also shown interest in holding the 2032 Olympics as part of a long-term hosting strategy which also includes 2030 Asian Games and Youth Olympics 2026.
Asian matches 2030 and 2034 were given to Qatar and Riyadh, respectively, in December.
