New Delhi: The government is expected to complete incentives under the new battery swap scheme for electric vehicles (EVS) in the next two months, an official told Reuters, in the midst of wider clean mobility to meet the purpose of decarbonization.
This policy will initially focus on the battery swap service for electric scooters, motorbikes and three-wheeled automatic rickshaws, the official said, in the encouragement for sectors such as shipping and sharing trips.
India said on Tuesday it would introduce a new policy to promote swapping, services that allow EV drivers to replace battery blocks that are used up for new ones charged at Swap Stations.
It’s faster than charging the vehicle and reduces the anxiety range for the driver.
The battery is also the most expensive part of EV and exchanging allowing companies to offer it as a service through rent or subscription models, lower costs and operate vehicles, industry executives.
The government tends to offer an incentive EV owner up to 20 percent of the total subscriptions or battery rental costs and this will be an addition to what they have gotten to buy clean vehicles, said the person.
In 2019, India set aside 100 billion rupees ($ 1.3 billion) to promote EV by providing direct incentives to buyers, but only around 10 percent of these have been used.
Incentives to exchange batteries will likely be given from the same funds, the official said.
Globally, exchanging batteries has been slow to get traction, especially among car makers.
Tesla Inc., last year, tested the model and decided not to offer it to customers but Rival Nio Inc.
offered swap services in China.
Last month, contemporary Chinese battery maker Amperex Technology announced plans to launch a swap station.
In India, the Reliance Reliance Industries industry has formed a joint venture with the UK PLC BP to offer battery exchanges.
Motorbike Maker Hero Motocorp and Taiwan’s Gogoro also partnered to set up a swap station, and this service is offered with the early sun mobility too.
The government will also define battery design and charging standard for companies that want to set the swap station.
This is to make sure the battery can be used throughout the EV car maker model, the official said.
“The idea is that if one company sets the battery swap station, other company vehicles must be able to use the same battery and service.
Disorders will only come on a scale,” said the person.
