India offers assistance to Sri Lanka in producing biofertilizers

Colombo: India has offered assistance to Sri Lanka in establishing organic farming to help the country achieve sustainable and healthy food security, officials said on Friday.
In an online interaction with officials here, the Indian High Commissioner to Baglay Sri Lanka Gopal said India would be happy to collaborate with the country in its transition to organic farming.
He said India could provide technical knowledge, capacity building training, regulating experts exchange visits and collaboration with research institutions.
Baglay said biofertilizer companies in both countries must explore the prospect of the establishment of a joint venture in Sri Lanka.
He said Sri Lanka had to take advantage of Indian India’s experience in managing food security.
High Commissioner said environmentally sustainable organic agriculture and good for consumer health.
Last month, farmer groups in Sri Lanka organized massive protests against the government’s decision to stop importing chemical fertilizers.
The government said farmers must look for 100 percent organic fertilizer.
