New Delhi: India and other countries, which are large emites of greenhouse gases, must achieve the target of clean carbon emissions in 2050 together, former Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission Planning Montek Singh Ahluwalia said on Friday.
Overcoming a virtual event organized by Economic Think Tank Icrier, Montek further said that every country must prioritize a reduction in carbon emissions trajectory that is consistent with development goals.
“India and all the other big emitors must reach clean-zero carbon emissions in 2050 together,” he said.
Net-zero emissions mean that the world does not add new emissions to the atmosphere.
He also said the development of technology now allows India to offer net-zero trajectories, including peak emissions in the coming decade and then reduce it to zero-zero over time.
“Adopting an approach, which is based on trajectory, and accepts the fact that developed countries must achieve net-zero earlier while developing countries can reach zero later,” Montek said.
Also, speaking at the event, Ajay Shah, professor of business research, Jindal Global Business School, said, “To finance climate action, we need a decentralized model in which the resource flow goes to the state and local government than only the central government.
Manjeev Singh Puri, a respectable fellow and at the Teri Advisory Council, said India will take some of the world’s largest climate acts in the coming years.
Recently, India has underlined that the target of achieving zero emissions in 2050 must be based on the principle of equality, With developing countries later, given their respective sustainable development paths, while developed countries must carry out minus nets.
Recently, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has emphasized that emissions must go down by 2030 and achieve emissions zero zero no later than 2050 to reach the goal of 1.5 Celsius from the Paris agreement.
“Even though there is a discussion about the concept of net-zero, it’s important to understand the implications.
“Global net-zero must be based on the principle of general but different responsibilities and equity, where developing countries will peak then considering the development paths of each sustainable,” Indian permanent representatives to the United Nations Ambassador have said.
The 26th party conference (COP-26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held at Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November under the British presidency, who partnered with Italy for the event.
It was billed as one of the biggest churches of world leaders and experts in combating climate change.
The Paris 2015 Agreement requires each party to prepare, communicate and maintain a nationally determined contribution (NDC) to be achieved.
