New Delhi: India recorded 50,035 cyber crime cases in 2020, with a surge of 11.8 percent in the violation over the previous year, as 578 incidents “fake news about social media” was also reported, official data showed on Wednesday.
The cyber crime rate (incident per lakh population) also increased from 3.3 percent in 2019 to 3.7 percent by 2020 in the country, according to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).
In 2019, the country recorded 44,735 cases of cyber crime, while the numbers reached 27,248 in 2018, data from the appropriate years showed.
This year saw 4,047 online banking fraud cases, 1,093 OTP fraud and 1,194 credit / debit card fraud, while 2,160 cases related to ATM were reported in 2020, the NCRB number showed.
There are also 578 fake news cases about social media, 972 related to cyber stalkers or female bullying and children, 149 false profile incidents and 98 data theft, he added.
In terms of motives, a maximum of 60.2 percent of cyber crime submitted in 2020 was carried out for fraud (30,142 of 50,035 cases), NCRB, which functions under the Interior Ministry, stated.
It was followed by sexual exploitation with 6.6 percent (3,293 cases) and 4.9 percent extortion (2,440 cases), data showed.
Among the countries, the maximum of 11,097 cases of cyber crime were reported at Uttar Pradesh followed by Karnataka (10,741), Maharashtra (5,496), Telangana (5,024) and Assam (3,530), showed.
However, the highest crime rate in Karnataka with 16.2 percent was attended by Telangana (13.4 percent), Assam (10.1 percent), Uttar Pradesh (4.8 percent) and Maharashtra (4.4 percent), data showed.
Delhi’s national capital recorded 168 cases such as this year with a crime rate of 0.8 percent, according to NCRB, which is responsible for collecting and analyzing crime data as defined by the Criminal Code and special and local laws in this country.
