New Delhi: India on Friday welcomed a joint promise by the US, Britain, China, Russia and France to prevent the spread of atomic nuclear weapons and emphasize that it remains committed to universal, non-discriminatory, and verifying nuclear equipment.
In a rare joint statement, five permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5) on Monday said the nuclear war could not be won and should not be fought and vowed to prevent the spread of atomic weapons.
Arindam Bagchi, spokesman for the External Ministry (MEA) said that as a responsible nuclear weapons state, India has a doctrine to maintain credible minimum prevention based on posture ‘without the first use’ and non-use of nuclear weapons towards non-nuclear weapons.
He said India remained committed to the purpose of universal nuclear weapons, non-discriminatory and verified.
“We welcome the combined statement this week, which reaffirms the importance of overcoming nuclear threats, and underlines the desire to work to create a security environment that is more conducive to developing in the disarmament of weapons with the world’s final destination with nuclear security for all,” he said.
Bagchi responded to a media query on a shared statement.
He said Indian annual resolution in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in ‘reducing nuclear hazards’ for steps to reduce the risk of using unintentionally or unintentional nuclear weapons, including through “de-de-targeting” nuclear weapons.
“Our annual resolution of the ‘convention on the ban on the use of nuclear weapons’ looks for the start of negotiations at a conference on the disarmament of weapons in the international convention that prohibits the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons under any circumstances,” he said.
“The two resolutions are adopted with substantive support in UGA.
India will continue to contribute further with the disarmament of global nuclear weapons and non-proliferation agenda,” he added.
