Indian Army Holds Workshops for the Village Defense Committee in Sangiot-Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu: Indian soldiers organize interactive workshops with members of the Village Defense Committee (VDC) Sangiot in the Poonch District, Jammu and Kashmir.
“During the workshop, the members featured their skills and skills in handling weapons.
Indian soldiers help all VDC members further improve their self-defense capabilities and emphasis on the role of the Village Defense Committee,” Pro Defense, Jammu, LT COL Devender Anand.

VDC members who participated in this workshop appreciated and praised the support provided by Indian soldiers in all fields, said Col Anand.
LT Col Anand further added that Sarpanch from Sangiot Village underlined the importance of such a meeting not only increased the bond between the army and Awah (local population) but also increased the moral of the villagers who in turn helped in maintaining peace and harmony in the region.
The Village Defense Committee (VDC) is an important part of the anti-rebellion grid in Jammu and Kashmir and first established in the mid-1990s in the Chenab Valley area to strengthen the security of those who live in remote areas and Doda Mountains, Kishtwar, Ramba , Rajouri, Reuration, Kathua, and Poonch Regency to arm and train villagers to survive against Pakistani sponsored terrorists.
VDC consists of villagers and special police officers (SPOs).
“Every committee consists of ten armed personnel who have been given weapons.
Officially the number of total village defense committees in two regions is 4125,” said LT Col Anand.
On June 29, 2016, the government of Jammu and Kashmir said that it was not feasible at this stage to dissolve the Village Defense Committee (VDCs), but their role was reviewed regularly and would decrease after the situation increased.
Given the security situation in the state and the role played by VDC, it may not be feasible to cover this at this stage, the road and building ministers and parliamentary affairs, Abdul Rehman Veeri, told the legislative council.
