Kolkata: American Association of Indian Doctors (AAPI), the largest ethnic medical organization in the US represents around 10,000 doctors in America, has partnered with Bangla NGOs based in Kolkata worldwide and contributed 160 covent ventilators to the country.
Of these, 60 was handed over to the state government.
Veteran Doctor Sukherjee, which is part of the NGO, handed one of the ventilators to NS Nigam Health Secretary at Swasthya Bhavan earlier this week before Dme Debashis Bhattacharya for use in Covid-19 treatment.
In addition to giving 60 ventilators to the government, it gives 60 more to charity hospitals.
The remaining 40 ventilators will be given to private hospitals in the condition that patients who need ventilator support will not be charged.
Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee, former Chairman of the Bombay High Court who led Bangla throughout the world, said a committee was formed with Sukherjee Sukumar doctor, Ashokananda Konar, Shibaji Basu and Red Cross Syed Nasiruddin for transparent distribution of ventilators.
“Applications that are sought from NGOs and their credentials are being checked before important devices are submitted to help care,” Justice Mookerjee said.
Mukherjee said Secretary Aeapi Amit Chakraborty had convinced NGOs that more ventilators would be sent to Bengal.
Portable ventilator is useful for use in ambulance to help revive patients when transported to the hospital.
