Becks Krishnan, the 45-year-old Indian national, who received a pardon from a death sentence in the United Arab Emirates last week, arrived back to his home in Kerala early on Wednesday morning on a flight from Abu Dhabi.
He was received at Kochi airport by his wife Veena and son Advaith.
Krishnan was sentenced to death by the UAE Supreme Court having been found guilty of reckless driving that killed a young boy in September 2012, and was languishing in prison since then.
Efforts by non-resident Indian businessman and chairman of the retail and hospitality Lulu Group, MA Yusuffali, helped secure Krishnan’s pardon in January this year.
Yusuffali, who had been approached by Krishnan’s family for help, paid AED 500,000 (around Rs 1 crore) as compensation to the victim’s family in court to secure the release.
The legal formalities related to Krishnan’s release were carried out last week by the judiciary, jail authorities and the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi thus clearing the decks for his return to his family in Kerala.
