New Delhi: High-level meetings between India and Russia concerning the situation in Afghanistan are underway after the Taliban takeover and the formation of a new caregiver from “Islamic Emirates” in a war-hit country.
The Indian-Russian government consultation in Afghanistan was led by two NSA – Doval Ajit and his Russian colleague Nikolai Patrushev who also included representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Defense and Security Agent.
This is a follow-up meeting of the two countries after telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin in August.
During the exchange of views between PM Modi and Putin, “the parties record the importance of joint efforts that will contribute to the formation of peace and stability in this country, ensuring security in the region as a whole”.
“They agreed to build a two-way channel for a permanent consultation about this problem.” This happened after the Taliban announced a new raretaker government on Tuesday, which consisted of hard lines, without women in the decision-making process.
According to the source, Patrushev will also call Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar.
They will review the political, security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the source said.
The meeting assumed many important because it would reflect new developments in Afghanistan created by the withdrawal of US troops.
Both countries share similar concerns on terrorism, especially to ensure that the Taliban obey their promises and guarantees.
The two NSA will also review activities of terrorist groups including Lashkar-e-Touiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, threats from drugs, the role of regional countries and Indo-Russian cooperation details to meet the threats and current steps to help Afghanistan, the source said.
