Hyderabad: When the third wave jumped, around 20-25% of cases detected in the city were reinfection in people who had tested positive Covid-19 both in the first or second wave.
Reinfection occurs in all age groups and also in full or partial vaccination.
For the 32-year-old Prakash Mancragada, the second infection came as a surprise.
He realized that he was positive when he did a RT-PCR test before domestic trip.
“I have a moderate infection in the second wave and I took more than a month to recover.
However, this time, I have no symptoms,” he said.
As for Rekha Sharma, a housewife, has become a second positive test in just five months of last infection.
“I’m sure I won’t be infected so fast.
Not five months since I was infected last.
I experienced a little headache and RT-PCR test showed me positive,” he said.
Like Rekha, many have been infected for the second time showing mild to moderate symptoms, the doctor said.
“While the reinfection case in our hospital is between 20% and 25%, most of the cases are light and treated as outpatients,” said Dr.
Rajiv Singhal, CEO of Group, hospital care.
With Omicron dominating positive cases and Delta is still very present, many patients also enter for testing their own genomes to find out the variant, hoping to be able to help in their care.
Dr.
Anurag Agrawal, Director of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, said that he had seen many second / third infections and did not need to do a genome sequencing to know which variant caused reinfection.
Apart from reinfection, some breakthrough infections were also reported.
“While we see a large number of reinfection, there are also many breakthrough infections.
About 30% is a case of breakthrough infection where uninfected people who get two doses of vaccines are further infected,” said Dr.
Pradeep Panigrahi, Medical Director, SLG Hospital.
