The work on the construction of the Mahametro and Flyover pillars in Nagpur blocked the view of 54 traffic signals.
Now, a member of the Parliamentary Road Safety Committee (PRSC) has proposed to replace these signals by hanging traffic lights.
According to the research by the NMC Traffic Department, the Metro pillar has affected the view of 25 signals from the automotive square to the T-Point airport.
Similarly, the view of 30 traffic signals has also been influenced in the east-west corridor.
The ongoing infrastructure project has also left at least 20 dead signals.
In addition to signals, many roads and busy intersections have been narrowed to accommodate pillars.
Quoting examples, traffic police showed that many metro pillars, including those in Munje Square, Variety Square and Dhantoli Square have become obstacles and accidents.
Pillars and Metro Rail stairs occupy a lot of street space, squeezing vehicles and also troublesome publicly, said traffic police, citing the example of Jaiprakash Nagar, central prison station and station on the north road Ambazari.

Vikas Mahatme told TI that the existing traffic signal needs to be repositioned.
“The assistance of the Visvesvaraya National Institute will be sought to study the strengthening of traffic signals in the city,” he said.
He quickly said that “we have to pay the fee to the Institute only will they begin to identify the intersection that needs to hang the traffic signal.” Funds will be sought from the Middleway Fund Department (CRF), which comes under the Union minister for Jalan Nitin Gadkari.
Mahathme said NMC and other government institutions such as NHAI, PWD and NIT have claimed to have repaired accident-prone spots.
“But we need to learn scientifically from VNIT, so that the accident on the road can be brought to zero,” he said.
CRF will also be used to conduct studies of accident-prone spots.
Gadkari has been approached for funds to identify and improve accident-prone areas.
“The Union Minister has given a positive response to the needs of the city,” Mahatme said.
A study of vulnerable spots in the Nagpur countryside has begun with the help of the vehicle manufacturer’s association and repair work will begin immediately, he said.
MP expressed concern over the increase in human error in an accident on the road.
“We need to focus more on educating and creating awareness among motorists about road safety,” he said.
