Mumbai: The three Indian naval sailors who were killed in the explosion on a rajput class destroyer, INS Ranvir, at the Navy shipyard on Tuesday took a nap during the work break when the incident occurred, said Colaba police said.
Prima Facie, the explosion occurred because of damage to the 4,000-ton ‘air-conditioned air conditioner compartment – related to the freon gas leak, said a source.
11 Members of the Wounded Crew underwent treatment at the Inhs Asvini Hospital in Colaba.
Their conditions are stable.
There were around 300 naval personnel on board when the explosion occurred.
“Three victims fell asleep three floors lower than the main entrance of the ship when the explosion occurred.
Those who suffered injuries were in the chaos on the second lower floor (one floor above the police point),” said a police officer.
“Many have breathed smoke, while others suffered injuries after running to the wall when the smoke had filled the room.” The police team will return to visit warships to gather further details, said source.
The bodies of the dead sailors, Krishman Kumar (46), Surinder Kumar (47), and Ak Singh (38) -Assigned roles as signals and communication, PT Masters Sports, and anti-submarine instructors, respectively – sent to The Navy after post-mortem examination at JJ Hospital.
“Family members of the died sailors have been told.
The body will reach their homes where the final rites will be carried out together with the honorary guard.
Meanwhile, the investigation board has started an investigation into an accident,” Defense spokesman said.
Ins Ranvir is on the spread of across coastal operations from the East Navy Command since November 2021 and will return to Pangkalan Port in Visakhapatnam shortly, the Navy said.
“There is no major material damage.
The warship will sail as soon as the investigation board ends and the compartment and damaged equipment are repaired.
There is no damage to the ship’s engine,” said a source.
