Baghdad: Iraq said Saturday has received 1.2 million doses of covid-19 vaccine pfizer-bionech through a covax sharing scheme, amid fears of the fourth wave in the country.
Nearly seven million Iraqans have received at least one dose of Coronavirus vaccine, by 17.5 percent of the 40 million country populations, based on government figures.
Overnight by years of conflict, corruption and negligence, Iraqi’s health system has struggled to overcome pandemics.
The Ministry of Health announced on Saturday the arrival of delivery of more than 1.2 million doses of “anti-covid pfizer vaccine through the Covax and UNICEF program”, UN children’s funds.
“Iraq still faces the danger of Pandemic Coronavirus,” Saif Al-Badr Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
“We hope to enter the fourth wave, (and) it can become a new variant,” he told government television.
More than two million Iraqis have been infected with Covid and 23,628 have died in Iraq since the plague of pandemic, according to official figures.
Although there is an increase in the number of people affixed, the Iraqi government cannot overcome the general skepticism of vaccines and steps that aim to prevent the spread of the virus.
There is a high level of public distrust in Iraq in the middle of a misleading information circulation of pandemic.
Covax is set to ensure a fair vaccine distribution, especially for low-income countries, and have provided more than 80 million doses to 129 regions.
