Baghdad: Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa Al-Kadhemi said he was not injured and begged “calm and hold back” after a drone attack on his residence on Sunday when political tensions were installed in the country.
The attack in the Green Zone Baghdad was the first to target Kadhemi’s residence, who had been in power since May 2020, and came when Iraqi political parties had a fight which would run the next government after last month’s election.
The vote saw the conquest alliance (fatah), the political arm of the al-Shaabi paramilitary network which was well-smoked, suffered a substantial decline in its parliamentary seat, leading the group to denounce the results as “fraud”.
No Group has not claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack, which left two injured guards, according to security sources.
In a tweet, Kadhemi called “for tranquility and restraces in the part of all people for Iraq’s good”.
“My residence has become a target of a coward attack.
Praise God, I’m fine and so are those who work with me,” he said in short videos distributed on social media.
“Missiles and cowardly drones do not build the country.” Kadhemi’s office described the attack as a “failed murder effort”.
The United States quickly condemned the attack and said it was “relieved to learn the prime minister was not hurt”.
“This clear acts of terrorism, which we have cursed, directed at the heart of the Iraqi state,” said the Ned Foreign Ministry spokesman in a statement.
“We are closely related to Iraqi security forces assigned to enforce Iraqi sovereignty and independence and have offered our help when they investigate this attack.” A large number of security forces were deployed in and around the heavily guarded green zone, which also hosted the US Embassy and often targeted by rocket attacks.
On October 31, three rockets fell in Mansour, a neighboring district, without causing injury.
The attack came during the period by by the tension of the October 10 election results.
Hundreds of Hash supporters clashed with the police on Friday while protesting near the green zone to vent their anger.
A protester died of their injury at the hospital, according to security sources, while the hash source said two demonstrators were killed.
The Ministry of Health reported 125 injuries, most of them from security forces.
Several hundred pro-Iranian group support returned to the green zone on Saturday to protest.
Some burn portraits of prime minister, which they call “criminal”.
According to the initial calculation, the conquest won around 15 of the 329 seats in parliament last month, down from 48 previously held, which made it the second largest block.
The big winner, with more than 70 seats according to the initial number, is the movement of Moqtada Sadr, a Shia Muslim preacher who campaigned as a nationalist and Iranian criticism.
The final election results are expected in a few weeks.
