Baghdad: Iraq said on Monday it has detained the top leader of the old al-Qaeda Islamic group and operative in cross-border operations.
PM Iraq Mustafa al-Kadhimi tweeted the news, identifying the man as Sami Jasim, who oversaw the group’s financial operations and served as deputy leader under the deceased Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.
Al-Kadhimi described it as “one of the most difficult cross-border intelligence operations carried out by Iraqi forces.
