Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Naphtali Bennett said people rushed to take a third vaccine shot as protection from the Delta variant which jumped from Coronavirus.
Bennett refers to government statistics on Sunday showing that more than 4,20,000 of the older Israelis of 60 have received booster shots, more than a third of the total targeted population.
Bennett said the number is expected to grow half a million people at the end of the day.
The prime minister spoke after a weekly cabinet meeting.
Israel saw the increasing number of people being treated at the hospital with Covid-19, almost all of them were infected with a very contagious Delta variant.
The government has restored its mask mask for the arrangement in the room and weighs more restrictions.
Israel became the world leader in vaccinating the virus during the initial public campaign.
About 5.4 million of the 9.3 million countries have received two doses of vaccines.
The World Health Organization in the last few days called for the moratorium to manage booster shots to help maintain supply so that people in poor countries can get their first dose.
